StoryQuarterly

StoryQuarterly is a literary journal that's been around forever. They were in need of an updated design but wanted to maintain the brand identity they had built up over the years so I gave them a few options from which to choose. We wanted to create a design that could remain consistent throughout subsequent issues with changing feature artwork (photos, paintings, etc).

In this first set, I was interested in using pixelation as a design element, reclaiming the dreaded low res image while making sure that the design intentions were clear (not accidental). There was a plant or garden motif in a few of the stories in this issue, so the idea of floral wallpaper kept popping up for me.

In this next set, I was trying some alternative layouts. The SQ logo needed to remain a part of the journal's identity, but the editors were hoping to give the cover a fresher, more up-to-date look while still keeping things clean.

The editorial committee ended up choosing this wraparound cover design featuring a photo I took of a fogged-in dock while waiting for a boat on a small island in Sweden.
